Mekelle Industrial Park, built at an outlay of 92 million USD, was inaugurated on July 9, 2017, by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn and other senior government officials. The park is said to be located 5 kilometers away from Tigray State’s capital, Mekelle, and create job opportunities for 20,000 people.
Speaking at the inauguration, Hailemariam said the industrial parks built all over Ethiopia would enhance the country’s ambition to become an industrial hub in Africa and brought economic transformation. It would also put Ethiopia’s name on the map of countries with a well-built good will in textile and apparel sector, he added.
Equipping the park with the necessary infrastructure to attract potential investors to the park is our assignment, the Premier added. the government would provide the necessary support to address the bottlenecks in the sector, he added.
This was the first phase of the industrial park built over 75 hectares of land with 15 sheds it was constructed by China Communications Construction Corporations (CCCC). The expansion project is scheduled to take place on 1,000 hectares of land.
Dr. Arkebe Oqubay, Board Chairperson of Industrial Parks Development Corporation, on his part said the park would play a significant role in promoting technology transfer and bringing economic transformation in the country.
